Quirky Swiss Festivals

Lonely Planet author Nicola Williams resides in the border region between Switzerland and France. In the Summer months, they engage in traditional festivals that run the gamut of testosterone-driven to plain odd. The Chüefladefäsch at Riedalp is a cow pat festival that involves smashing piles of excrement and looking for prizes. The Schwingen Festival in Affoltern im Emmental is a little like Swiss sumo and the Bukolik Free-ride involves humans screaming down-hill on various un-motorised wheels.
