Around 60 years ago, as a very small child my parents gave me a pile of very old 78 rpm records to play on their wind up Columbia gramophone. I think the idea was that I didn't ruin their prized dance band records from the 1930's! They all dated from the late Edwardian period and I presume they had probably belonged to my Grandparents. This 'Winner' record number 105 is titled 'The Other Department Please' sung by HARRY BLUFF. The story is a simple one. He enters a department store to buy a yard of lace for his wife and is sent to every department except the one he requires by the 'shopman'. In the early days of department stores they employed what were known as 'shop walkers' that met customers at the entrance and directed them to the department they required. You may remember Captain Peacock from 'Grace Bros' Eventually when he finally arrives at the correct department he is told by the saleman that he has 'just sold out!' I played this record over and over driving my dad crazy but the pile of records were disposed off when we moved in 1956 [I wonder why?] and I have never seen a copy of it since that day. This summer I was presented with a box of ancient 78's that to my amazement contained a copy of Harry Bluff's record. I guess it was recorded around 1912 so it will shortly be 100 years old. The radiogram playing the record is a 1938 Murphy A46RG using a Garrard magnetic head with steel needles, making it 26 years the records junior. Records before 1925 were not ...
