Restoring 10-Speed Dragged Out of Scrap Metal Trash Dump Heap
Since I hate spending money for anything, I paw through trash heaps and pull out things that can be fixed up and used some more. This old, old 10-speed bicycle was pulled out of the scrap metal heap pile at a fire station which sorts garbage by metal, plastic, glass, wood, and toxics. After $14 in a new tire, $6 for a new tube, and hours and hours of work, it's running again. Next comes a new seat and a lot of steel wool to scrape and scrape and scrape off the rust. The wrong side break pads were on it though the pads themselves were in good shape. I turned them over and swapped them left for right so it has breaks. I adjusted everything so that the front and rear derailers also work. This bike will be test driven in a week, going some 48 miles or so, some of it at 45 miles an hour down hill. We shall see if it holds together!
